10 Best Omega 3 Supplements With Clean Sourcing
The Good Trade editors endorse products we’ve personally researched, tested, and genuinely love. Learn more about our methodology and business model here.
We’ve used and researched the best clean supplements for years. These are our favorites for omega-3 that are thoughtfully sourced, third-party tested for toxins, and have minimal taste and odor.
Getting enough omega-3 fatty acids — sometimes called fish oil — in our diet can be challenging, especially if you don’t like or eat fish. (Even though fish is a main natural source for omega-3s, we’ve found some fish-free vegan options to try!) We love the below brands for offering docosahexaenoic acid (DHA) and eicosapentaenoic acid (EPA) — two types of polyunsaturated fatty acids and types of omega-3 fatty acids — in easy supplement form. Having enough omega-3s keeps our organs and overall body functioning. Keep reading to learn more about the benefits of omega-3s and also the brands we trust most for getting our daily recommended intake!
What is omega-3 good for?
“Omega-3 fatty acids have been found to reduce inflammation [and] support hormone production, promote a healthy reproductive system, and contribute to brain health and mood regulation,” shares We Natal, a science-backed supplement brand focused on reproductive health. “Numerous studies have shown that omega-3 intake positively affects sperm quality, natural conception, and in vitro fertilization (IVF) outcomes [and] omega-3s during pregnancy supports the healthy growth and development of the baby. These essential fatty acids are crucial for optimal eye and brain development in infants.”
But, first: What even are DHA, EPA, and Omega-3s?
DHA and EPA are both omega-3 fatty acids. Most supplements contain a mix of the two, though each has different benefits:
- DHA (docosahexaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid found in fish and algae. It is essential for heart, brain, and eye health; it helps with memory, learning, and vision.
- EPA (eicosapentaenoic acid) is an omega-3 fatty acid found mainly in fatty fish (mackerel, sardines, salmon). It’s loved for its cardiovascular health benefits, including lowering blood pressure, inflammation, and triglycerides. It can also help reduce depression and regulate mood.
How much omega-3 should you take per day?
As for how much omega-3 you should take daily, general guidelines suggest that adults should aim for at least 250-500 milligrams of combined EPA and DHA per day for overall health, according to the National Institutes of Health (NIH). These numbers may increase or decrease depending on age and any specific health concerns or pregnancy, so talk to your doctor before adding a supplement to your routine. This is especially important if you are on other medications or supplements since omega-3s can interact with or affect your medication’s efficacy. Overall, you shouldn’t experience any negative side effects when adding fish oil to your diet — and if you do, talk with your healthcare provider! While you may notice fishy breath, we’ve done our best to find supplements that minimize any fish burps or nasty aftertastes.
